Net Metering

Thinking of using a renewable "green" energy technology to generate your own electricity and reduce your monthly costs?
Net Metering might be the ideal solution for you.

Our Net Metering program is available to any Hydro One customer who generates electricity primarily for their own use from a renewable energy source (wind, water, solar radiation or agricultural biomass). Net metering allows you to send electricity generated from Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) to Hydro One's distribution system for a credit towards your electricity costs. Excess generation credits can be carried forward for a consecutive 12-month period to offset future electricity costs. Net-metered customers can now pair energy storage with renewable energy systems.

Information on connecting micro generation (up to 10 kW) to Hydro One's system is available here.

For net metered customers only

Effective July 1, 2022, amendments were made to Ontario’s net metered regulation. When applying for a net metering project, confirmation is now required under sub-section 7.(1)(f) of O. Reg. 541/05, (Net Metering), made under the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998. Both application forms — Connection Impact Assessment Application Form (CIA - Form B) and Form C - Micro-Generation Connection Application Form — contain the mandatory Net Metering Confirmation of Disclosure.

Prior to the amendments, the net metering regulation required the customer to own or operate the renewable generation system to qualify as an eligible generator. The changes will now enable third-party ownership arrangements for net metering, such as leasing, financing and power purchase agreements, providing electricity customers in Ontario more options to participate in net metering. Further information can be found at O.Reg.541/05: Net Metering (Ontario.ca).

Important information about your generation connection and transformer sizing

Please review the Technical Interconnection Requirements (TIR) – Micro Generation & Small Generation, 3-phase, less than 30 kW and Generation Transformer Guide. You may incur additional costs for your connection according to your existing transformer size and the amount of generation you propose to install. For more information, please refer to the TIR or contact us.

Customer choice for net metering customers

On January 17, 2023 the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) issued a staff bulletin that sets out the OEB’s staff view that electricity distributors shall offer Net Metered customers their choice of either Tiered Regulated Price Plan (Tiered RPP) or Time-of-Use (TOU RPP). Hydro One is currently reviewing the bulletin and will provide an update on our positioning over the next few months.
